La Muñeca Fea: a cave in Puebla only for explorers

It is one of the largest caves in the world and the largest in Latin America, located south of the state of Puebla, in the Sierra Negra.

La Muñeca Fea (The Ugly Doll) is a cave located in the south of the state of Puebla, in the Sierra Negra. It is one of the largest caves in the world and the largest in Latin America.

Experts say it is a stratovolcano –which is a type of conical volcano of great height–, it was formed due to the filtration of water through the cracks, which, with the passage of time, dissolved the calcium carbonate of the rock, until it formed conduits through which explorers can pass.

In the case of the halls, the filtered water caused the weakening of the roof and, therefore, the collapse of the stratovolcano several times, until the Tlamanictli cave and the Muñeca Fea hall were created.

It was explored for the first time in 1999, but in a chronicle reported by the speleologist Gustavo Vela Turcott, in México Desconocido, he assures that the cave of La Muñeca Fea is 400 meters deep and has a volume of 5.9 million cubic meters and almost 63 thousand square meters.

In fact, he says that when he shouted inside the cave, the echo lasted 13 seconds.
With this data, it ranks as the fourth largest hall in the world, below:

  • Sarawak Chamber, located in Malaysia, which measures 154,530 square meters.
  • Miao Hall, located in China, measures 140,540 square meters.
  • Torca del Carlista, located in Spain, measures 87,090 square meters.

How to get there?

This cave is located in the Sierra Negra in southern Puebla. In the story, Gustavo Vela says that he and his research group arrived in Tehuacán, continued by road to Zoquitlán and then along the road to Cosavicotla.

Then you have to climb on foot for 30 minutes, passing through the community of Cruztitla, until you reach the mouth of Tlamaniactli.

To visit it, it is recommended to have experience in speleology -science that studies the origin and formation of caves-, good physical condition and be a good explorer.

The road is very complicated, as most of it is dirt road, so a large car is needed.

To enter a cave, the recommendation is never to go alone, going in a group is the best option.
