There is in Puebla the San Luis Atexcac Lagoon, with green and blue water, that is, turquoise, which draws the attention of visitors, especially because of its origin in a crater.

It’s an axalapasco, a large water’s body  formed in a volcanic mountain, in the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene, according to the United States Geological Society, after the explosion of igneous material and the natural erosion of craters; in fact, for this reason these types of formations are also called crater lagoons.

The name “Atexcac” comes from Nahuatl and means “in the steep waters” it also gives its name to the town of San Luis Atexcac, which is located on the north shore of the crater, in  Guadalupe Victoria town.

The color of the water is the main attraction. If you want to see it, it is necessary to go up to the crater, along a rocky and slightly slippery path. Also to be at the foot of the lagoon, you have to descend about 100 meters, taking a rocky path that borders the crater.

In the surroundings you can’t enjoy only the view of the lagoon, but also its ecosystem with pines, magueyes, succulents, among others, with a temperate semi-dry climate. Therefore, the ideal is to wear comfortable shoes and clothes, to walk, as well use sunscreen.

It isn’t recommended to swim in this body of water, to be safe, ask to Civil Protection from Puebla, since deaths from drowning have already been reported. In this sense, the ideal is to visit alone to enjoy the view and walk around, with caution.

As parking place, there are some properties owned by residents that allow cars to stay there under their care, usually for a fee of approximately 15 pesos per hour (70 cents), although it varies by site.

Where is San Luis Atexcac Lagoon?

The San Luis Atexcac Lagoon is located in Guadalupe Victoria Town, Puebla. It’s also close to Las Derrumbadas, two rhyolitic volcanic domes.

You have to get to San Luis Atexcac first, once there you take a road that leads directly to the lagoon and you can easily follow the route through applications such as Google Maps or Waze.
